3 Tips for Styling Winter Sessions
CARLY ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY | UTAH FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER
This was my first family photography session in a Salt Lake City winter and honestly as we were planning it I thought we might be crazy… BUT with the right preparation it was not only possible, but magical.
Trying to balance beautiful outfits while simultaneously making sure you’re fighting that Utah winter chill can be tough. Save these tips to make you next winter session easier:
1. Choose heavy, textured fabrics! My favorites include corduroy, chunky knits, velvet, leather, tweed, and neutral flannels & denims. The heavy fabrics keep you warm, while the textured fabrics add detail and style to your images. When picking these fabrics be sure to look for muted colors and neutrals.
2. LAYER!!! Layering has two purposes in your winter session. It adds more texture to your styles & keeps you warmer. Think knit tights under dresses, chunky sweaters, stylish overcoats.
Bonus layering tip: choose outfits that can easily have warm pjs or thermals layered under them for kiddos… try to pick white or neutral so if they stick out it won’t look funky
3. Incorporate a warm blanket into your styling. I have a variety that I’m happy to bring for my clients that work well with every color scheme.
Utilizing these methods in our session helped everyone stay comfortable & HAPPY! Despite the cold weather we made magic at the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, one of my absolute favorite locations. This spot is also a wonderful spot for a winter family hike in Utah.
